Russian officials on high alert on New Years following bombings

Posted: Updated:

VOLGOGRAD, Russia (AP) - Buses moving through the streets of the Russian city of Volgograd today have been empty.

A student there says people are afraid of a repeat of the suicide bombing attacks on transit facilities Sunday and Monday that left 34 people dead. The student says people are "trying not to go outside if they don't have to."

On the streets, police in body armor and members of Cossack units are standing guard.

Officers and security guards have been carefully searching the purses of young women entering a shopping center. They've been waving metal detectors over men and women.

Authorities in the city have canceled New Year's Eve celebrations and have asked residents not to set off fireworks.
