Genoa Police Sergeant disciplined for Facebook post

Posted: Updated:

More than 70% of Americans are on Facebook and many are quickly learning that it's hard to make anything truly private. A Genoa Police Sergeant learned that lesson when he was recently disciplined for what he posted on Facebook.

Sergeant Todd Mocniak received "corrective counseling" after he posted cartoons with captions mocking the police chief of the Clay Township Police Department.

Genoa Police Chief Bob Bratton told 13ABC that Mocniak thought it was a funny joke. But in a letter to Mayor of Genoa, Bratton said that "Sergeant Mocniak's posting only adds to the tension between individuals and agencies." He continued in a note to Mocniak that "your actions only side-step the professional demeanor in which you perform your duties." If it happens again, the Chief warns, "it could very easily escalate to a very serious infraction."

This situation isn't a first. Experts warn to be aware of what you are posting and saying on social media websites. More companies are crafting social media policies for employees as well.
