Lourdes University's women's basketball team ended the 2013 calendar year, along with non-conference play for the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 70-47 at eighth-ranked Saint Xavier on the second day of play at the Saint Xavier Christmas Classic held at the Shannon Center in Chicago, Ill.
The Gray Wolves were held to just 28.8% shooting from the floor on the afternoon, and could not recover from a 20-point halftime deficit.
Tiffani Blackman (Toledo, Ohio/Start H.S.), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, was the only Gray Wolf to score in double figures on the day, tallying 16 points while grabbing nine rebounds.
Lourdes trailed just 16-14 with eight minutes to play in the opening stanza before the Cougars went on a 26-8 run to close the half, as the hosts took a 42-22 lead into the locker room. Saint Xavier extended the lead to as many as 28 points in the second half before posting the 23-point margin of victory.
Jessica Durr (North Royalton, Ohio/North Royalton H.S.) scored eight points off of the bench while Tarynn Hampton (Saint Louis, Mo./Alton H.S.) added seven points and grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds.
Morgan Stuut paced Saint Xavier (13-3) with 16 points while grabbing 19 rebounds. She added four steals and four assists. Niara Harris added 13 points off of the bench for the Cougars.
Saint Xavier capitalized on 18 Lourdes turnovers, converting them into 29 points.
Lourdes (3-11) will return to Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon, as the Gray Wolves host Marygrove. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Tam-o-Shanter.
