Donovan named MAC Player of the Week

Posted: Updated:

Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Erica Donovan has been named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon (Dec. 30). Donovan, a redshirt sophomore, earns the honor for the first time in her BGSU career.

Donovan becomes the second BGSU player in as many weeks to earn the honor. Last Monday (Dec. 23), senior Alexis Rogers picked up MAC P-O-W accolades. BG's list of honorees this season also includes senior Jillian Halfhill, who was named league player of the week on Nov. 25.

In addition to earning MAC Player-of-the-Week honors on Monday, Donovan also was named the conference P-O-W by the College Sports Madness and the Hustle Belt web sites.

Donovan, a native of Northside Texas (John Jay H.S.), had a double-double in the Falcons' lone game of the week, an 81-66 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday (Dec. 29). She set a career scoring high with 22 points, and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double, both this season and in her collegiate career.

Donovan also had three assists and a steal in 28 minutes of action vs. the Red Flash. She scored 11 points in the game's first five minutes, as the Falcons took a 24-5 lead in that time & never let the lead fall below double digits thereafter. Five of her 10 rebounds came at the offensive end of the floor, and she was 2-of-5 from three-point range and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line in the win.

On the season, Donovan is averaging a team-best 12.6 points per game, and she also has 6.1 rebounds per game to rank third on the Falcons in that category.

Donovan was named the MAC Player of the Week for the East Division. Ball State's Brandy Woody and Central Michigan's Jessica Green shared this week's MAC P-O-W award for the West Division.

The Falcons concluded the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 10-2 record, winning four games at home, three on the road and three more at neutral sites. BGSU has posted a double-digit non-league win total for the seventh time in school history, by far a MAC record. All seven of those double-figure win totals have come within the last eight seasons.

BGSU opens the 2014 calendar year and the MAC schedule by taking on the University at Buffalo on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 4). Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center
