Bulldogs Fall 62-59 at Ohio Wesleyan

The women's basketball team met host Ohio Wesleyan on Monday afternoon in the championship game of the OWU Bishop Classic and dropped a tight 62-59 decision. It was the third all-time meeting between the schools and the first meeting since 2007.

Adrian jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first 5:02 after a triple by Casey Fougerousse. OWU responded with a run to take a 10-9 lead at the 12:55 mark of the first half. The score was tied 16-16 with 6:14 left in the half and then Adrian went on an impressive run to the tune of 17-6 to end the half and lead 33-22 at the break.

Ohio Wesleyan had a big second half but not until around the 14:38 mark did they start to make their move. Adrian led 44-33 after a pair of free throws by All-Tournament Team selection Lauren Rhoadswho finished with 16 points for the second straight day. OWU cut the lead to 46-43 over the next four minutes to setup a good finish.

The Bulldogs and Battling Bishops were tied 54-54 with 4:03 remaining and OWU took the lead with the second free throw made by tournament MVP Sarah McQuade. Neither team scored for nearly two minutes when Adrian took a 56-55 lead on a layup by Rhoads. Julia Grimsley connected on a big triple with 1:40 left to give OWU a 58-56 advantage. Fougerousse answered with a three-pointer with 1:22 to go to give Adrian a one-point lead. McQuade made a pair of free throws with 49 seconds to play to give OWU a 60-59 lead. Adrian had two chances to take the lead again but two turnovers proved costly. Hanna Fedorka made a pair of clutch free throws with five seconds left to give OWU a three-point lead. Fougerousse had one last chance to tie the game and send it into overtime, but could not convert with one second to go.

Adrian shot 32.2 percent from the floor while Ohio Wesleyan went 23-of-70 for 32.9 percent. Ohio Wesleyan had 24 offensive rebounds and 48 total boards. Rhoads went 8-of-8 at the free throw line and grabbed six rebounds while leading the team in scoring. Fougerousse added 11 points and has now scored in double figures in three straight games. She made 3-of-8 from behind the arc in 27 minutes.Antoinea McElroy grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds and scored seven points.
