Winter storm causing headaches

Posted: Updated:

Getting back to work proved to be a challenge for many on Thursday because of a winter storm.

Highways were snow covered and some drifting was reported in rural areas.  Thursday morning, nearly 7 inches of snow had fallen at Toledo Express airport but some areas were experiencing heavier amounts.  Snow was not expected to taper off until Thursday afternoon.

Motorists seemed to handle the snowfall with few problems.  Several counties had declared snow emergencies early Thursday including Lucas (level 2) and Wood (level 1) Counties.  Lucas County Sheriff John Tharp told 13abc.com he was closely monitoring road conditions but that people were handling the conditions well.  Numerous accidents were reported along I-475 between Maumee and Perrysburg.  Early morning tie ups were reported due to spin outs along I-280 near the Glass City Skyway and on I-75 at Miami Street.

Some schools received an extended holiday break due to the weather while others were delayed.  A growing list of meeting cancellations was available at 13abc.com.

13abc crews spotted snow plows working to clear roadways but secondary highways were reported snow covered and motorists were advised to drive carefully.  In Temperance, Michigan, meteorologist Ben Cathey said that plows were plowing along Lewis Avenue but that ruts had developed from the heavy snowfall there making conditions hazardous.

Oak Harbor, Northwood and Dundee declared a snow emergencies prohibiting parking along city streets.

The winter blast is not expected to let up any time soon.  Accumulating snow is expected in the Toledo region on Sunday followed by extreme and possibly record cold weather.  Temperatures are expected to reach 10 below zero early next week.
