Snow removal crews try to keep highways clear

Posted: Updated:

The big challenge for Ohio's road crews is keeping up with the blowing and drifting.  Ohio Department of Transportation spokesperson Theresa Pollick says crews keep plowing the same roads "over and over again" because of the drifts caused by snow and steady winds.

ODOT crews in district 2 (Toledo region) used more than 800 gallons of fuel in a 24 hour period with no end in sight.  Pollick says that roads are "passable" and they are working hard and doing the best they can to keep roads clear.  "This is not a typical snowstorm" because of the duration.  And it's not over yet.

Snow was predicted to continue through mid-afternoon Thursday dumping an additional 2-3" on the Toledo area.  Temperatures were forecast to plunge below zero overnight.  Another possible storm is on the horizon for Sunday.

Speeds on area interstates were as slow as 17 mph according to 13abc's WAZE app early Thursday.
