Toledo police chief's last day on the job

Posted: Updated:

Thursday was the last day of duty for Toledo Police Chief Derrick Diggs. The chief resigned last month citing irreconcible differences with the new mayor.

Diggs says he's not sure what he's going to do next.  He says he's very thankful he was allowed to protect and serve the community.

"I'm going to go down that road where life takes me and if some other career opportunities pop up and I have an interest for that then we'll see," former Toledo Police Chief Derrick Diggs.

When Diggs joined the Toledo police department he quickly worked his way up through the ranks. The last two years he has served as police chief. He's transformed the police department into a 21st century law enforcement agency. The department is recognized for it's new cutting edge technology like it's sky cop cameras.

"During my watch both years double digit crime reduction occurred. Response times to calls for service has dropped both years which means our police crews are arriving on scene faster than ever before," said Diggs.

Other cities have modeled their programs after Toledo. Morale within the department is at it's highest despite the city's financial challenges

Chief Diggs also implemented a new style of policing called data driven intelligence.

"That lets me focus where our manpower where crime is occurring." said chief Diggs.

Chief Diggs along with the bell administration hired at least three police classes with approximately 165 officers.

"I'm very proud of the men and women of the Toledo police department have been able to accomplish because its them out there on the streets everyday that are making sure that the public safety plan that I put together is working," said Diggs.

The chief admits it hasn't been easy saying goodbye.

"What will you miss most that's a tough one its got to be the people. its got to be the men and women that I work with on the police department," said Diggs.

He's spent his entire life protecting and serving this community.

"I walk away knowing I did the best job for 37 years"
