ODOT fights persistent storm

Posted: Updated:
Toledo, OH -

ODOT crews have tried to stay consistent in their battle against our most recent arctic blast.  The wind, snow and cold temperatures have made it a tough fight.

ODOT plow driver Al Groll loads up, checks his plow and hits the road.  He's done this kind of thing for decades and knows every storm is different.  This one no exception.

"It just blows it's not a snow that sits and packs.  It's just hard to maintain  and to keep it clean because it just keeps moving on you,"  said Groll.

On the roads, conditions changed all day for several reasons.

"Not only because we have the snow fall but we have the high wind as well and the cold temperatures.  and those three factors make it a big challenge for crews to be out there," said Theresa Pollick  of ODOT.

With over 100 crews throughout Northwest Ohio, ODOT mostly plowed Thursday.  The salt would have blown away.  As hard as they tried, the constant snow was always one step ahead.

"Once we go over a location, it will either drift back over or more snow will fall on top of it.  So it's really a challenge."

Drivers giving plows like Al's space to work helps.  So do drivers slowing down.  That keeps everyone on the roads safer.  Now these crews could use some help from mother nature.

"We think we'll be able to get an edge on the roadways once we see the wind die down and if we get sunshine tomorrow.  That's going to be a big factor to heat up the pavement and make that salt work more efficiently," said Pollick.
