Major winter storm slows downtown Toledo

Posted: Updated:

Rush hour traffic backs up on quiet mornings in downtown Toledo, much less when there's seven-plus-inches of snow and a regime change underway.
Terry Morris pedaled around downtown until a breakdown forced him to walk to the source for job applications.   Normally his bike means a quick commute, even in the snow.

"The roads seem a little bad, but I'm sure they'll get on it sometime today," Morris said.  "They'll get it cleared up.  Like I said, I think it hit them a little unexpectedly, becoming this bad."

Nick Haddad commutes from Monclova Township to his downtown barber shop.   He says the drive along the Trail took him 45 minutes.   His business relies on customers coming in from the suburb to downtown Toledo.   He didn't expect to see any of them Thursday.

"Thursday is a busy day for me usually, especially in the morning.   But on day like today, I won't be very busy at all.   I haven't seen anybody walking by yet.   I've been here about an hour and nothing happened yet."

If this were a normal Thursday, downtown would be crowded and not deserted like it is now.   But with more than a foot of snowfall drifting on some of the cities sidewalks, many businesses have decided to close.

Ruben Rojas came downtown to surprise his daughter with a gift.

"Oh the roads are quite bad actually.   But as long as everybody drives slow, they're aware of the conditions, everybody should have a safe trip wherever they're going."

"We got a lot of snow quick.  I also do landscape and I plow snow. I've been up for 18 hours straight hours and I actually gotta go back so this is a nice break for me," Rojas said.  "But it looks like it's not gonna stop anytime soon, so everybody's gotta be prepared for it."
