Arctic blast approaching Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio

Posted: Updated:

Heavy snow, high winds and dangerous wind chills are part of a powerful winter storm approaching Southeast Michigan and Northwest Ohio

Light snow will start light around 10pm Saturday with 1-2" of snow is possible by Sunday morning. The heaviest snow will fall between noon and 7pm Sunday. During that time snow could fall at an inch per hour at times with winds gusting up to 35 miles per hour. Wind chills will drop to 20 below zero.

We can expect between 6 - 10 " of snow with less to the east and south.  12" plus totals are possible in narrow bands in the northwest counties and parts of Hillsdale and Lenawee County. There is a chance for sleet south of Toledo, Findlay and Lima after 8pm Sunday night, that changes back to snow before the blast falls apart and moves east.

The real concern is wind and bitter cold. Winds will increase late Sunday night and Monday with 40mph wind gusts. Winds sustained over 35 miles per hour with less than 1/4 mile visibility for more than three hours are the ingredients for a blizzard. Conditions late morning and early afternoon on Sunday could fall into blizzard territory.

Record breaking low temperatures are possible Monday night and Tuesday. Wind chill values will drop to -30 to -40 degrees by Monday morning.
