Safe ways to stay warm during frigid weather

Posted: Updated:

Temperatures are expected to go even lower next week, and that means more people will be heating their homes with the wrong things.

Safety officials warn against using stoves, ovens, grills or similar appliances to heat a house.  They also recommend keeping space heaters out of the bathrooms, and away from flammable objects.

"The worst fires are in the bedrooms," says TFD Battalion Chief, Ken Gehring. "They put them in the kids' bedrooms to keep them warm at night. I understand that but you also put their lives in danger when you do that."

Columbia Gas plans to have more crews on standby over the next few days to deal with any heating emergencies.

"We don't take any time off for the weather," says Chris Kozak with Columbia Gas. "We're out doing what needs to be done."
