Toledo Mayor: "Stay off the roads."

Posted: Updated:

Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins is issuing a word of caution to those in the Glass City during Sunday's snowstorm: "Stay off the roads."

During a news conference Sunday afternoon, Mayor Collins said, "Let's get past this in the safest way."

City employees not involved in emergency operations related to the storm have been told to stay home Monday. Therefore, Mayor Collins is asking anyone who may need to contact the city tomorrow to exercise patience because staffing will be minimal.

Flanked by the director of Streets, Bridges and Harbor, the mayor explained 125 vehicles, including private plow contractors, will be clearing the roadways overnight.

City workers are bracing for an intense effort during extreme conditions, including strong winds and up to 8 additional inches of snowfall on top of roughly ten inches already on the ground.

Lucas Co. Sheriff John Tharp has issued a Snow Emergency Level 3 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. It will be illegal for any non-essential drivers to be on the roads during that time.

With sub-zero temperatures in the forecast, the mayor is also urging residents to use safe methods to heat their homes.
