Columbia Gas wants to remind customers that there are some very simple tips that could help keep you safe when the weather turns cold.
Make sure all appliances and heating equipment, such as a furnace, water heater or stove, are inspected and operating properly, and operate all pieces of equipment according to the manufacturer's instructions.
No matter how cold you get, never use stoves, ovens or grills as a source of heat and always make sure you have ventilation for fireplaces and space heaters.
If you use a fireplace, have a proper glass or metal screen in place to catch sparks.
If you are using a space heater, place it on a level, hard surface and keep anything flammable at least three feet away from things such as paper, clothing, bedding, curtains or rugs.
Turn off space heaters and put out fires before leaving the room or going to bed.
Don't forget to protect your pipes. Leaving water running at a trickle can help stop freezing.
And don't forget to check your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors.
