Doctors warn parents to keep kids inside during deep freeze

Posted: Updated:

Doctors are warning folks to stay inside on Monday.

The possible record sub-zero temperatures put everyone, especially kids, at risk for frostbite and hypothermia.

It's a one-two punch and parents are worried about Round 2: the bitter, dangerous cold.

A frosty layer of icing coats the snow-whipped landscape.

From the Maumee River, you can barely see the Skyway Bridge.

After seeing several inches fall, it's now time to deal with the brutal cold.

Doctors say it's downright dangerous. It only takes mere minutes for exposed skin to get frostbite.

"It's very dangerous," says Dr. Ashley Kanjira at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center. "They should stay indoors at all times if possible. I would only leave the house if they have an emergency to attend to."

Dozens of kids hit the sledding hill in Maumee Sunday afternoon at Side Cut Metropark.

"I got all my snow pants on and jackets and everything, hats and gloves," says 10-year-old Abi Smalley.

Kids enjoyed the last hurrah out in the marshmallow world before they're hunkered down at home.

"I think that it's really cool because the last few years we haven't had any snow at all really and so we finally have one year when we finally get to go sledding," says 11-year-old Chloe Rosenberger.

As moms and dads huddled around the fire near the sled hill, sixth-grader Lucas Klotz built a snowman for the first time in years.

"The last time was probably when I was like 5 or 6 when I was really because it wasn't good snow like this," says Klotz.

"We're trying to have some fun before we get stuck in the house all day," says Lisa Rocco, a mom from Maumee.

Although it's a snow day for most kids on Monday off of school, parents plan to keep them locked inside where the heat will keep them safe from the deep freeze.

"Trying to keep them inside and keep them warm and hoping that everybody stays healthy and we don't have to go out in it," says Rocco.

An official with the Metroparks says as long as Lucas County is in a Level 3 snow emergency, the parks will be closed as well.
