Arctic blast shatters records

Posted: Updated:

According to the National Weather Service, 13.0" of new snow fell at the Toledo Express airport, however the strong winds have drifted the snow away from the observation platform. The official snow depth will go down in the history books as 12" on January 6th, 2014 despite the heavy snow that fell earlier this week.

A total of 22.4" of snow has fallen this month. We are 8.4" away from breaking the record for the snowiest January on record. That record was set during January of 1978 which is when the famous Blizzard of 1978 hit. January 2014 is already going down in the record books as the  5th snowiest month on record with 25 days to go. The month is also the 15th snowiest month in recorded Toledo history. 34.1" of snow has fallen this season which is about 3 times above the average to date.

More records will fall Tuesday morning. We will break the daily record low and will get close to the all-time coldest temperature on record of -20 degrees.
