Plow drivers calling this a storm for the ages

Posted: Updated:

A common sight around Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan over the past week has been snow plows.  Even some of the most experienced drivers say this is one of the more challenging storms they've seen in a long time.

The biggest issue has been keeping up with this storm.  In some places there have been crews virtually nonstop for this storm.  And at times some say they feel like they are spinning their wheels.

Take for example Promedica Saint Luke's Hospital, a place that's a non-stop, 24-7 operation.  So this storm can't stop the hospital.  That's why Green Sweep crews have stayed on top of lots like this.

"These aren't 1-2 inchers where your average guy can handle it.  I mean we're using very heavy equipment front end loaders, dozers," said Steve Fuzinski of Green Sweep.

Fuzinski's business is snow removal.  He says this combination of cold, wind, and snow make this system extremely challenging.

"One hit, there was a gap, two hit, and there was a gap, and right now we are going into number three which is going to be this severe cold," said Fuzinski.

The cold will be brutal because at the lows we'll see, regular salt doesn't work.  Even the basics of plowing making this storm at times maddening.

"Then you have the customer saying, it's back.  You go back.  You might plow a lot 6-7 times where in a normal storm once," said Fuzinski.

He also needs to worry about his crews in the biting winds.  Even though he wants to get to everyone as quickly as possible, safety is paramount.
