Frostbite & hypothermia prevention

Posted: Updated:

The kids may have a snow day Monday morning but now isn't the time to send them outside.  The sub-zero temperatures increase the chances of catching frostbite or hypothermia.

Both can cause permanent damage if they're aren't treated.  Early symptoms of frostbite include numbness, tingling, and bluish or pale waxy skin.  The first signs of hypothermia include, shivering, fatigue and a loss of coordination.

"I definitely would not want little children out in this type of weather," says UTMC emergency physician, Dr. Kris Brickman.  "It's one thing to go out to the car. But to be out playing in this type of weather, I think it's a little too cold to do."
