Monroe Co. asks people to stay off roads through Wed. morning

Posted: Updated:

Almost anywhere you go, the roads are messy.

In Monroe County, local leaders do not issue snow emergencies, but Tuesday, the Sheriff and Emergency Management Agency issued a weather advisory.

It basically means stay off the roads if at all possible so crews have enough room to plow and treat the roads.

"It's all packed down," Alex Barta a Michigan driver said.  "It's slippery."

Highways in the Wolverine state are a wintry mess.

At least eight cars slid off of U.S. 23 this evening.

"They're [the roads] are drifting," Michigan driver, Jeff Fisher, told 13abc.

County roads were just as bad.

"It's too cold for the salt to work," Mark Pisaneshci, a local driver said.

The Monroe County Road Commission is working around the clock to make the roads safe for drivers, but it's proved to be a challenge.

What looks like snow is a solid sheet of ice.

"Keeping people off the road so the plow trucks don't have to deal with the people is a good idea," Chris Kaminski, who lives in Lambertville said.

Law enforcement resources are being stretched to the limit.  In some cases drivers may not get help for hours if they choose to venture out and end up getting stranded.

"If people can stay off it would be better," Dan Solarek, a local driver said.

Monroe County leaders plant to reassess the road situation on Wednesday morning.

There is no penalty for driving in the county.
