For the first time in school history, the Adrian College men's hockey team is ranked number one in this week's USCHO.com Division III National Poll. Adrian jumps up one spot which it held for the last two polls and the Bulldogs received 13 first place votes and 291 poll points.
Plattsburgh State held the top spot until a loss to Hobart this past weekend. Plattsburgh falls to third this week and Wisconsin-Stevens Point received four first place votes and is currently second with an 11-1-0 record and 271 poll points. Fellow NCHA member St. Norbert is getting two first place votes this week and is fourth with an 11-2-0 record. The Bulldogs have a challenging schedule during the second half of the season with a series against St. Norbert and No. 14 St. Scholastica.
One of the biggest reasons for the top billing is the team's emphasis on defense this season. The Bulldogs have allowed just 16 goals in 13 games this season (1.23 gpg) to rank first in NCAA Division III. The team's offense is still as potent as ever also ranking third nationally at 4.85 goals per game. The team also currently ranks second nationally in scoring margin winning by an average of 3.62 goals per game. Adrian's discipline on defense also is shown this season as they have cut down on penalty minutes.
The Bulldogs are also ranked No. 1 in this week's D3hockey.com Division III Poll. Head Coach Ron Fogarty has guided the program to this milestone in the seventh year of existence. Adrian College currently has a program record of 157-20-7 (.858 win percentage) and an incredible 118-4-6 record (.945 win percentage) in conference games over the last six-plus seasons. The Bulldogs will carry the top spot into St. Olaf on Friday, Jan. 10 for an 8:30 p.m. eastern time face-off.
