Many rural roads remain "sheets of ice"

Posted: Updated:

The freezing, windy weather continues to make many rural roads icy and dangerous, hindering any salting efforts by the plows.

13abc's Christine Long is on the move for us Tuesday evening. She's live across the state line in Michigan with a look at road conditions.

People in Monroe County are still being advised to stay off the roads unless it is an emergency.

Emergency officials are asking drivers to stay off all Monroe County roads until Wednesday at 7 a.m. This includes primary, secondary, and side roads. It will allow road crews to clear roads and remove the many stranded and abandoned vehicles that are blocking roads.

On M-52 in Michigan between Adrian and the Ohio border, drivers are helping other drivers navigate the treacherous roads.

"Basically, they're sheets of ice right now," says Sgt. Aaron Hunt with the Michigan State Police. "Drivers shouldn't be on the road at this point."

The icy conditions continue to be a problem. But plow drivers can't do much about that. They're in a battle against the blowing and drifting snow.

Several miles south in Ohio's Fulton County, a tractor with a plow mounted to the back moved for an oncoming car, but got sucked into the soft stuff.

"I can't stop quite as quick," says Mike Nofziger, the rural mail carrier for the Lyons area. "I slid past a few places."

Nofziger says as bad as it looks, at least it's better than yesterday.

"I only got stuck once. I got stuck once today," says Nofziger. "Of course, I'm not done yet. The back roads are pretty bad in some places. There are some roads I didn't even try and go down."

Packard Road in Lenawee County just south of Adrian is down to just one lane because of a snow drift being fed by an endless supply of snow from the other side.

On 223 east of Blissfield, a jack-knifed semi truck stopped traffic in both directions around 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

No one was injured, but Sgt. Hunt says the truck driver was lucky and other drivers should beware.

"It's just completely iced over," says Sgt. Hunt. "There's nothing that the salt will do to try to melt the ice and snow. It's just too hard packed and it's too cold."

Jackson called police when they arrived home and no one knew where her children were. The police report says the children went home, but argued with Jackson's teenage son and decided to go to a friends' house.
