Dundee, Bedford schools will remain closed on Thursday due to icy roads

Posted: Updated:

Parents and kids in Southeast Michigan are waiting to find out if school will be canceled on Thursday for the fourth day this week.

That's because many rural roads remain slick or snow-covered.

As of 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dundee and Bedford schools have announced the districts will be closed on Thursday.

The Monroe County Sheriff lifted the "Do Not Drive" travel advisory Wednesday morning. Conditions are improving, but roads that have been plowed are still down to one lane and ice-covered in some areas.

Road after road after road in Southeast Michigan remains covered in ice and snow.

In Summerfield, they're even using an excavator to help clear snow.

"They didn't even put a snow plow through our road, they had to use a pay loader and scoop it out," says Jim Bice of Ida. "We had five foot drifts. It was pretty bad."

The wind has died down, but drifts like this one on Whiteford Center Road south of Sterns still block traffic down to one lane, putting drivers in a dangerous position.

"They're a little icy and snowy still, so just trying to go slow, take our time," says Kelsey Bradford.

With temperatures rising, our windshield wiper fluid is actually working for the first time in two days.

In the Village of Dundee, people are flocking to the grocery store. The Bice family is antsy to be out for the first time this week.

"The combination of the snow and the bitter cold was pretty bad, but we made it," says Bice.

Bradford is finally heading home to Lansing.

"We came down for my grandma's funeral on Saturday and we were going to leave on Monday, but we haven't been able to," says Bradford.

In Summerfield, buses remain locked up, as some kids celebrate that the stir-crazy feeling of being locked inside their home because of the arctic blast is finally over.

Christine asks 8-year-old Madison Hoffman, "What have you been doing the last few days stuck inside?" Madison says, "Playing my tablet that I got from Christmas."

Christine asks 5-year-old Robbie Hoffman, "Are you ready to go back to school?" Robbie, after doing a canon ball into the snow, says, "No!"
