Seniors head back outside after snow

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Weather maps and broken records paint our history, but neighborhood seniors connect us to the real story. The Troy Senior Center off of Indiana Avenue just re-opened its doors today and the sense of community was evident. Prentiss Anderson says he wins most hands of spade and likes getting outside.

"If the kids down the street don't come, I get out myself and shovel and sweep, whatever it is," Anderson said.   "If it's a dusting, I get out and sweep. If it's close to an inch, I get out and shovel. I don't wait for anybody to come, you know, I do it myself."

Anderson is a retired economics teacher and used to sing for Motown. He spent much of his time in the Motor City.

"I was in a blizzard in Detroit in 1962 where it was waayyy down below zero. And a car stopped on the freeway in motion it was so cold. It was about seven below zero in Detroit."

Emily Williams grew up in Jamaica and moved to Toledo back in 1967. She's a veteran of snow now, but that wasn't always the case.

"And I remember, I came off of the plane at Toledo Airport and I saw the white stuff on the ground and I didn't want to get out the plane because I didn't know what it was," Williams said.   "So they finally talked me into coming off the plane then I realized it was what snow looked like because I've never seen snow before."

Williams and her husband enjoy the cool air and actually help their neighbors shovel sidewalks. She lived with the blizzard of 1978 and says recent storms have been very similar.

"Sometime it's mild, sometimes it's bad as this, somedays it can be worse. You never know, you know. So you just take it by the way it is when it come."
