Chance to see Northern Lights Wednesday night

Posted: Updated:
Toledo, OH -

There's a chance to view the Northern Lights tonight in parts of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.  The best time to look will be after midnight, into the early morning hours.  Try to get away from city lights and look to the northern horizon.  Clouds may block the view for the southern part of the viewing area, but there's a better chance of clear skies in the north (especially in Southeast Michigan).  Picture from the Geophysical Institute.

Weatherwise, it's looking dry and cold tonight.  Lows in the north (where it's clear), will drop to near zero or just below zero.  Lows in the south (where it's cloudy), will drop into the single digits above zero.  Temperatures will slowly climb into the 20s by Thursday evening.  There's a chance of snow showers tomorrow evening and tomorrow night with up to 1" of accumulation possible.  It looks even warmer on Friday with highs in the mid 30s.

Rain moves in on Saturday with highs in the lower 40s.  Dry and mild for Sunday with highs in the upper 30s.

The city of Detroit says it won't shut off water to people with unpaid bills for the next 15 days, the latest response to a controversy that caused a large protest last week. The city gave an update Monday in bankruptcy court. The water department stopped service to about 7,200 homes and businesses in June, compared to 1,570 in the same month last year. Water was restored to 43 percent after customers paid or worked out payment plans.
