Pharmacies see rise in demand for flu shots

Posted: Updated:

Two people in our area have already died after contracting the flu. Officials say there's no need to panic, but area pharmacies are seeing an increase in demand for the flu vaccine.

The Blade has identified one victim as 62-year-old Connie Bucklew. She died on Tuesday from the H1N1 virus. The Health Department says a 50-year-old Temperance man also died from the Flu.

Local hospitals report a spike in cases with Promedica saying 39 patients have tested positive for the flu. A Mercy spokesperson says their hospitals have treated 71 patients.

Pharmacies like Westgate Family Pharmacy say they are seeing an increase in customers wanting the flu vaccine.

The post popular choice is the quadrivalent vaccine, which protects against four flu strains, including H1N1.

Owner Najwa Kassem says, "every day all day, especially the last few days. I think it has a lot to do with this weather."

The pharmacist we spoke with reminded people that once you get your flu shot, it takes up to two weeks to take full effect.

Dan Sczensny already has his shot this year. Wwe got our flu shots this year, all three of us had flu shots, so I can't say that I'm concerned about it, but it certainly is sad that people died of this."
