NW District station under repair/ to reopen

Posted: Updated:

It could take another couple months to complete but work on the northwest district police station is underway.

The station on Sylvania Avenue in West Toledo has been closed since July, 2012, but workers are getting it ready to re-open by the Spring.

Walking through the station is like walking through Toledo's public safety vault.

The station was open for years and became part of the home of each resident.

Former mayor Mike Bell refused to re-open the station even though council allocated $100,000 for that purpose, last winter.

But within hours of D. Michael Collins being sworn in as mayor workers began looking the place over and tearing out what has to be replaced.

Lieutenant Mark King, with the Toledo Police Department, is the point man on the project.  He says a few problems were discovered upon inspection "but we found it to be in pretty good condition considering it hasn't been occupied for a while."

There was some flooding in the basement… and the carpet and some doors and the walls need painting or repair.

It is all cosmetic work and, eventually, officers will work out of here again.

This building used to house the Domestic Violence Unit, the Special Victims Unit and uniform patrol officers but that will change.

King told 13abc's Bill Hormann, "We won't be staffed that fully but we will have a nice complement of people here."

Traffic patrol will definitely work out of this station and probably the Special Victims Unit…

Repairs could run tens of thousands of dollars and there's a real question whether neighborhood stations actually reduce crime.

But councilman Tom Waniewski (R) says residents tell him they want to building reopened.

"When the residents perceive that this building helps them feel better, sleep better at night, than I think it's worth it," he says.

The mayor has promised this building will open within his first 100-days in office.

Work on fulfilling that promise has already begun.

Mayor Collins and Police Chief Moton will decide what details are housed in this building…  but patrol units will likely not work out of here.
