TPD recruits put to the test

Posted: Updated:

The new Toledo police class is halfway through its training. On Thursday the officers were put in some high risk situations. The officers got a hands-on feeling for what they could face on the streets. New police recruits spent the day practicing tactical training.

"We're all nervous, because we don't really know what to do. They are kind of throwing us in there. We have to figure it out on our own, and then they'll tell us 'Hey you did this right. Next time you might want to do this.' So it was good," says TPD recruit Kevin Currie.

Instructors at the academy say, before the 75 new recruits can hit the streets, they have to know how to handle high risk arrests. The academy used real police officers as suspects to test the recruits. For one exercise, the officer must chase a suspect and make an arrest.

"When they catch them they have to follow correct procedures, the handcuffing, interrogation and so forth," says Toledo Police Sgt. Patrick Skinner.

The officers practice using their handcuffs. The pretend suspect even attempts to smooth talk the officers into letting him go. Instructors evaluate each recruit on their skills.

"Once they get on the scene, using good tactics, you want to see how they conduct themselves, how they talk to the suspect, how they talk to the victim, and see if they get all the information need for the report or to make an arrest," says Skinner.

The new recruits will graduate in May.
