Hundreds turn out for walk-in flu clinic

Posted: Updated:

Hundreds rolled up their sleeves on Saturday, hoping for protection against the flu.

With several death in the region, people like Annie Cieslukowski don't want to take chances. "We heard about the people dying from the flu and that kind of thing and we'd rather be safe than sorry."

The number of reported cases in the area in climbing. Nearly 400 people have been hospitalized. So the Lucas County Health Department decided to offer two walk-in flu clinics this week.

Stacy Debruyne from the Health Department said, "At this time we have a lot of rise in flu reports, so we want to make sure we are getting as many people vaccinated as we can."

Seven deaths have been linked to Influenza and the H1N1 virus in our region this season.

Mario Miller said, "We heard there was a lot H1N1 going around, so we wanted to stay healthy and come in and get the flu shot."

The vaccine offered protects against the serious H1N1 virus. More than 130 people had been vaccinated within the first few hours of the clinic and that number was expected to double by the end of the day.

But the Health Department says if they run out of vaccine, they'll do their best to get more, so a future flu clinic could be in the works.
