Teen girl and boyfriend save neighbors from burning house

Posted: Updated:

A teen girl and her boyfriend are being credited with saving the lives of two neighbors by pulling them from a burning home on Gill Street.

The girl's mother, Shannon Hovey, says she awoke to flames and was frightened for her neighbor's safety. "I knew the mom was still in, so I was flipping out that she wasn't going to be able to get out."

Hovey's teenage daughter and the girl's boyfriend raced to the rescue, pulling a woman and her son from two separate windows.

Hovey said she tried to comfort the woman's other two children. "I got the kids in my house, told them it was going to be okay, had them sitting there on the couch and came out. By that time, the mom was out, thank God."

Though the family escaped, the family pets were not that lucky.

Hovey says, "I didn't see any of the dogs or cats, so I knew it was not going to be through.

The house was so badly damaged, it had to be demolished.

During demolition of the home, she says a badly injured basset hound emerged from the rubble, burned but alive. The dog is now with its family.

The four family members who escaped the fire are recovering their ordeal.

Investigators aren't sure what started the fire.
