Students seeking diversity to meet with U-M

Posted: Updated:

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - University of Michigan students seeking to promote racial diversity at the school are expected to meet with university officials this week.

Leaders of the Black Student Union on Monday released a list of demands aimed at increasing black enrollment and inclusion on the Ann Arbor campus, including lower housing costs for low-income students. They want black enrollment to be 10 percent.

Provost Martha Pollack tells The Ann Arbor News that they'll meet. The Detroit Free Press reports an online petition is urging action.

Earlier this month, University of Michigan officials said they planned steps to boost racial diversity on campus, increase black enrollment and improve the school's multicultural center. Black students made up 4.6 percent of the school's freshman class in 2012, down from recent years.
