Drifting snow, black ice make rural roads treacherous

Posted: Updated:

The blowing and drifting snow is affecting drivers in Wood County, with gusty winds keeping many of the rural roads near Bowling Green extremely treacherous.

The gusts are easily kicking up the lightweight snow across Route 25, creating blinding conditions for drivers. On Route 25 near King Road we found four cars that either crashed or slid off the road.

A state patrol car was even hit while responding to an accident in the area.

No injuries have been reported, but black ice is now starting to form and becoming a larger issue.

"With the traffic, the heat of the tires is melting snow and creating that water on the roadway," says Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant Robert Burd. "It instantly freezes as the vehicle crosses over top, which creates black ice. A lot of times it's so polished you can't see it. But, if your lane looks darker than the other lane, you are driving on black ice, and people are not understanding that."

Troopers are warning drivers travelling rural roads to slow down considerably. They also suggest that you use your hazard lights to make yourself more visible to other drivers.
