Ohio lawmakers on what they expect from SOTU address

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON, D.C. (01/27/2014) – It is a tradition that started with America's founding fathers. On Tuesday, President Obama will deliver his fifth State of the Union Address to a joint session of Congress.

After a rough 2013, and facing lower than ever approval ratings before a big State of the Union address, the President has a plan.

He is set to tell the nation that he is willing to sidestep Congress to get things done.

"We're making progress but states like Ohio have just slipped back a little bit, but we have to keep the momentum going," said Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), who said she is looking forward to the president's address.

Kaptur said she believes keeping up the momentum means tackling some big issues.

"I think the president is going to talk about continuing to grow our economy and jobs," she said.

"And I hope he talks about unemployment compensation benefits. And I think he's probably going to talk about the health bill."

It is a key midterm election year and the president is facing a Republican-controlled House of Representatives. Some of those Republicans think the president is abusing his executive power.

"Number one the American people are talking about is Obamacare, and that we've seen the failed rollout and now we see at the beginning of this year, the new taxes are kicking in, and people are going to start finding and feeling those. And you know, Americans are hurting on this. And so I would like to hear what the president would like to do on Obamacare," said Rep. Bob Latta (R-OH).

The president is expected to talk about narrowing the gap between the rich and poor, increasing the minimum wage, and getting something done when it comes to immigration reform.

And this State of the Union is going to be different for viewers at home. Now, viewers can get directly involved with an interactive site sponsored by the White House. It will allow users to see charts and links to more information about issues the [president is discussing in real-time.

The White House says the State of the Union is not just a conversation with Congress, but a conversation with the American public – one that's expected to shape this New Year on Capitol Hill.
