Cold weather brings better tips to freezing food workers

Posted: Updated:

Area food service workers are braving the cold temperatures to make sure customers are fed despite the sub-freezing temperatures.

Dale Gentz delivers food for PJ's Deli in Downtown Toledo. Their doors stay open even during level 3 snow emergencies.

Dale says, "Just gotta keep going. People still have to eat."

We went along with Dale on his farthest delivery of the day, which was a 10 minute walk from the deli. Dale says it doesn't bother him to deliver food on foot in the cold.

"I wear my hood, stocking cap and gloves, which I don't usually wear."

Dale isn't the only worker who can't escape the Arctic blast. At the Sonic on Secor, car hops like Janese Haley are still working in the snow. "I don't look forward to it, but it's my job, so I have to come out anyway."

The store manager says they are still serving 15 to 20 vehicles a day despite the cold. But for safety's sake, they have ditched their signature roller skates.

But these workers say there is an up side. When the wind is blowing, the customers tip better.

Dale says instead of the usual dollar or two, customers are offering five or six dollars.
