Mourning Toledo firefighters

Posted: Updated:

Firefighter Stephen Machcinski and Jamie Dickman will be remembered as heroes who died doing the job they loved.

Toledo firefighters local 92 union leaders talked to 13abc about their loss.

"As firefighters and 1st responders we deal with the unusual every day and now this is unusual for us," said the Vice President of Toledo Firefighters local 92 Dan Desmond.

The two firefighters were killed fighting an apartment fire. They are the 48th and 49th firefighters to die in the line of duty in the 177 year history of the Toledo fire department. The fire department is prepared to give the men full honors.

"We do have a gentleman from the International Association of Firefighters who's here to help in any capacity that he can as much as help as we need as little help as we need and he is an expert as far as a full honors funeral," said Desmond.

Fire administrators say the families of the fallen firefighters are their number one concern.

"We were talking about the children of Jamie Dickman."  says Desmond. "He has a young daughter and a son who's one month old."

"We are prepared to take care of them. There's actually several that are prepared to take care of them. Personally and probably on the first level is within our collective bargaining agreement there's a $50,000 death benefit for them, and then and then funeral arrangements also should be taken care of. There's a whole host of other things as far as education being provided by state universities in Ohio. There's a benefit, a national benefit called the Public Safety Officers benefit. We have our Toledo Firefighters Health Plan that provides a benefit for the families and then the outpouring of support from the public," said Desmond.

An outpouring of support that has been so amazingly overwhelming the Toledo firefighters say thank you!
