Lourdes Notes at Concordia (Mich.)/vs. Indiana Tech

After picking up an overtime victory on Saturday evening, Lourdes returns to the road on Wednesday evening, traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle Concordia (Mich.) in WHAC action.  The Gray Wolves will then return to the home hardwood on Saturday afternoon, hosting Indiana Tech at Tam-o-Shanter.


Head Coach Karen McConnell: In her first season both on the Lourdes bench Karen McConnell has a 5-16 (.238) record.  Overall as a women's collegiate head coach, McConnell has a 285-263 (.520) record in her 21st season.  She is only the second head coach in Lourdes program's history.


Series Notes: Concordia holds a 5-0 advantage all-time in the series dating back to Oct. 27, 2011 after winning earlier this season at Tam-o-Shanter.  The Cardinals are 2-0 against the Gray Wolves at Tam-o-Shanter.  Indiana Tech holds a 4-1 edge in the series dating back to Jan. 7, 2012.  The Warriors won the first meeting this season in Fort Wayne, Ind.  The Warriors are 1-0 against Lourdes at Tam-o-Shanter with the lone meeting coming during the first contest ever between the two schools.  Last year the two schools met at Adrian College.


Earlier This Season: Lourdes led at the half on Dec. 7 at Tam-o-Shanter, but Concordia went on an 11-0 second half run to defeat the Gray Wolves 67-61.  Tiffani Blackman led Lourdes with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Brooke Adams led all scorers with 22 points for the Cardinals.  On Dec. 14, Lourdes and Indiana Tech were tied at 37 at halftime, but a 20-4 second half run pushed the Warriors past the Gray Wolves 88-69 in Fort Wayne, Ind.  Lauren Tilden tallied a team-high 23 points for Lourdes while Chelsea Carradine and Rachael Kruse each tallied 24 points for Indiana Tech.


Wrapping Up Last Week: Chelsea Williams' put back as time expired on Wednesday evening lifted Madonna to a 72-70 victory over the Gray Wolves.  Tiffany Scott led four Lourdes players in double figures with 21 points while Tiffani Blackman and Lauren Tilden each added 14 points.  Tarynn Hampton made two free throws with 15 seconds to play to force overtime and Lourdes scored the first six points of the extra session to down Michigan-Dearborn 64-60 on Saturday night.  Hampton finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds.


Scouting Concordia: The Cardinals had their two-game win streak snapped on Saturday, falling 70-50 to #8 Concordia (Neb.).  Brooke Adams, who ranks third in the nation in scoring, leads Concordia averaging 25.3 points per game.  Becca Sabol adds 11.0 points per night and is the team-leader grabbing 9.5 rebounds per contest.  Her 42 blocked shots rank 14th in NAIA Division II.


Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors enter the week having won three straight games following an 81-41 victory against Michigan-Dearborn last Wednesday (Jan. 22).  Indiana Tech was scheduled to play at Aquinas over the weekend, but the games were postponed.  The Warriors play at Siena Heights on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes on Saturday.  Rachael Kruse leads Indiana Tech averaging 17.0 points per game while Chelsea Carradine adds 16.9 points and a team-leading 9.6 rebounds per game.  Carradine's 59.1% shooting from the floor ranks seventh in the nation. 


Schedule Change: Lourdes regular season finale against Aquinas has been moved to Owens Community College in Perrysburg due to a scheduling conflict at Tam-o-Shanter.  The game will also tip off one hour earlier than originally schedule, with the ball now being tossed into the air at noon.


Saturday Marks #550 For McConnell: Saturday's game will be the 550th collegiate game for head coach Karen McConnell, who is in her 21st season as a women's head coach.  She enters the week with 285 career victories.


Bonus Basketball: In its first two seasons of women's basketball, Lourdes had never played an overtime game.  The Gray Wolves have now played two overtime contests already this season, and have won both.  Lourdes downed Holy Cross (Ind.) on the road in game number two of the season 73-71 before posting the 64-60 triumph at Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday.


Doubling Up: Tarynn Hampton added two more double-doubles to her resume last week with a 13-point, 12-rebound effort against Madonna and a 20-point, 11-board night at Michigan-Dearborn.  She now has eight double-doubles on the season, including three straight, and 17 double-doubles over the last two seasons. 


Bench Production: Courtney Slepko came off of the bench to score 14 points for the Gray Wolves on Saturday in the win at Michigan-Dearborn.  It was her fourth double-figure scoring night of the season, and her second highest point total of the year.  In addition, she matched a season-high with four rebounds and added a season's best, four assists. 


Crashing the Glass: Tarynn Hampton ranks second in all of NAIA Division II averaging 4.7 offensive rebounds per game.  Hampton ranks 15th overall in total rebounding, averaging 10.2 rebounds per night.  As a team Lourdes ranks 12th in the nation pulling down 15.7 offensive rebounds per contest, and its +3.3 rebounding margin is 35th best in the country.


Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season.  Serving in the leadership role for 2013-2014 are Tiffani Blackman and Tiffany Scott.  Blackman is a two-time team captain while Scott is in her first season as a team captain.


This and That: Tarynn Hampton played all 45 minutes in the overtime win over Michigan-Dearborn ... Lourdes has shot exactly 50% from the free throw line in three straight games ... Tiffany Scott has 21 blocked shots in 21 games.
