Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Having lost five of its last six games, Lourdes looks to rebound this week with a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contests. The Gray Wolves will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to battle Concordia (Mich.) on Wednesday evening before returning to Tam-o-Shanter on Saturday afternoon to entertain Indiana Tech.
Head Coach Andre Smith: In his third season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Andre Smith has a 63-54 (.538) record. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history. Smith was the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-2013.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 5-3 all-time against Concordia (Mich.) dating back to Nov. 2, 2010 after the Gray Wolves defeated the Cardinals earlier this season. The two schools have split the first four meetings all-time in Ann Arbor, Mich. Lourdes is 4-3 all-time against Indiana Tech dating back to Oct. 30, 2010 after the Warriors downed the Gray Wolves earlier this year. Indiana Tech won the two previous meetings at Tam-o-Shanter, but last year Lourdes won its "home" game against the Warriors at Adrian College.
Earlier This Season: Lourdes forced 21 turnovers on Dec. 7 and made 5-of-7 three-point attempts as the Gray Wolves defeated Concordia (Mich.) 66-56 at Tam-o-Shanter. Elvin Butler led Lourdes with 18 points while Josh Fugate paced the Cardinals with 15 points. Indiana Tech scored 12 of the first 14 points on Dec. 14 and defeated the Gray Wolves 65-55 on Dec. 14 in Fort Wayne, Ind. Zach Steinmetz scored 20 points to lead Lourdes while Rontray Chavis tallied 20 points in the win for the Warriors.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Madonna went on a 24-2 run midway through the first half which proved to be the difference on Wednesday night as the Crusaders downed the Gray Wolves 61-49. Jake DuPree led Lourdes with 13 points while Zach Steinmetz tallied a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. On Saturday Lourdes battled back from a nine-point second half deficit, but came up short in a 57-55 loss at Michigan-Dearborn. Elvin Butler and Ron Dukes each scored 15 points while Steinmetz tallied 10 points and 18 boards.
Scouting Concordia (Mich.): The Cardinals have won two of their last three games after defeating Concordia (Ill.) 80-74 in the Concordia Invitational. John Schaeffer leads the team in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game while Josh Fugate chips in 14.9 points per night for Concordia. Schaeffer ranks eighth in NAIA Division II averaging 3.3 three-pointers per game and is shooting 42.9% from long range.
Scouting Indiana Tech: The Warriors enter the week having won two straight following a 68-59 victory over Michigan-Dearborn. Saturday's game at Aquinas was postponed due to weather, and Indiana Tech will head to Siena Heights on Wednesday before visiting Lourdes. Rontray Chavis leads the Warriors averaging 16.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 60.6% from the floor, a mark that ranks 11th in NAIA Division II. Jeff Hoskins adds 13.2 points per night and Nick Lewis chips in 11.6 points per game. As a team Indiana Tech is allowing just 63.4 points per game, sixth best in the country.
Schedule Change: Lourdes regular season finale against Aquinas has been moved to Owens Community College in Perrysburg due to a scheduling conflict at Tam-o-Shanter. The game will also tip off one hour earlier than originally schedule, with the ball now being tossed into the air at 2 p.m.
Steinmetz a Mainstay in the Lineup: Zach Steinmetz is the only Gray Wolf to start all 22 games this season. In fact, not one else has started more than 19 contests throughout the year. A total of 12 different players have started at least one game though.
Only Three in Every Game: Only three Lourdes players have seen action in all 22 games this year. In addition to Zach Steinmetz who has started every contest, Jerome Talton and Isiah Boddie are the only other Gray Wolves to take the floor each night.
Double Trouble: Zach Steinmetz notched two more double-doubles last week, giving him a total of 10 on the season, including seven over his last nine games. He began the week scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 boards against Madonna before tallying 10 points and grabbing 18 rebounds at Michigan-Dearborn.
Making Shots: Both Eric Worthey and Zach Steinmetz are shooting the ball well from the floor this year. Worthey is connecting at a 56.2% clip while Steinmetz has made 52.7% of the shots he has attempted. Elvin Butler has been solid from three-point range, shooting 41.4% from beyond the arc.
Shooting is Key: Lourdes has not won a game this season in which the Gray Wolves have shot a lower percentage from the floor than their opponents.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2013-2014 are Elvin Butler and Jake DuPree, both first time captains.
This and That: Lourdes ranks third in the country allowing just 62.0 points per game ... opponents are shooting just 30.1% from three-point range against the Gray Wolves, seventh best in NAIA Division II ... Lourdes is in a stretch of playing four out of five games away from home ... the Gray Wolves are currently in a tie for sixth in the WHAC, but just one game behind fifth place in the win column and equal in losses with eighth place.
