Crews from around the region staff Toledo fire stations

Posted: Updated:

Emergency calls will continue to come in tonight as the Toledo Fire Department says goodbye to its fallen brothers. Crews from more than a half dozen other departments will be helping staff the Toledo stations. The departments in our region have what's called a mutual aid pact, meaning they all work together to help a department in need and of course this is one of those times.

Crews and equipment from more than half dozen other departments rolled into town about five o'clock on Thursday to help cover the city on this dark day. Sylvania Township Chief Jeff Kowalski says dozens of his off duty firefighters are working in Toledo, "We asked all of our off duty guys if they would be interested in helping Toledo and every single one of them signed up to help." Chief Kowalski says Toledo was one of the departments that was there for Sylvania Township crews in their time of need, "We had a line of duty death on the department about 15 years ago and Toledo came in and took over and helped us get through it. It is devastating to go through this as a department."  It's not just firefighters, Sylvania is also sending equipment, "We take our own equipment because the crews don't know the idiosyncrasies of the Toledo engines and trucks. If we had more equipment to send we would but we are sending everything we have in reserve to help our Toledo brothers in their time of need."

Lt. Matt Hertzfeld of the Toledo Fire Department says the crews coming in to help will be working alongside some Toledo firefighters,"It is a fact of being a firefighter, the calls don't stop. Our slogan is making a difference every day and it's not every day unless it is cold or rainy, it is making a difference every day and that is what they are doing today." Lt. Hertzfeld says the show of support from fellow firefighters and the community has made a tough time a little bit easier, "This is our tragedy but it has become the community's tragedy. We have been overwhelmed and humbled by the devotion and support we have been shown."

Sylvania Township and the other departments backfilling in Toledo will have full complements on duty in their cities, they are only sending in off duty crews. The Sylvania Township crews will be done tonight at 11, but they will be back helping Toledo on Saturday. Maumee, Perrysburg, Rossford, Oregon and Springfield are some of the other departments filling in for Toledo.
