Community honors fallen firefighter Stephen Machcinski

Posted: Updated:

A strong show of support for fallen firefighter Stephen Machcinski on Saturday morning.

With heavy hearts friends and fellow first responders came together on Saturday morning to pay last respects to Private Stephen Machinski, one of two Toledo Firefighters killed in the line of duty on Sunday.

"It always hits home when you see two brave soldiers go down. Just always hard to lose one of your own." said Border Patrol agent John Mendofik.

One by one, dozens of first responders lined up at Franklin Park Mall as departments from across our area took part in Private Machinski's funeral procession.

Paramedic Brian Cress says, "We are here to show our respect to families and the firefighter, but also we are here to show that we will be here in time of need for the entire community."

The eight mile procession was led by a fire truck from Station 3 and made its way from the mall to Downtown Toledo's Fire Station 5.

Ontario Street stood still as the rig carrying Machinski's casket made passed through the city he so proudly served.

Melaine Grosjean was in the crowd. "Something like this really shows how important firefighters' public service is here. We have been standing here for a little while, it's cold, but it's all right. This is what these guys do all the time. So it's very humbling to be here."

Fellow Firefighters lined the street for one final salute.

The family of Private Machinski is asking that any donations be made to the family of fellow firefighter Private James Dickman, who leave behind a wife and two small children.

Donations an be made to the Private Dickman Memorial at any PNC Bank.
