Falcons Rally to Down Duquesne, 5-2

Posted: Updated:

The Bowling Green State University tennis team lost the doubles point, but rallied back for a 5-2 win at Duquesne Saturday (Feb. 1). The non-conference dual match was held at Alpha Fitness and Tennis of Pittsburgh.

With the victory, the Falcons improve to 2-0 in dual-match play on the young season. The Dukes drop to 1-2.

Senior Nikki Chiricosta and sophomore Katie Brozovich each picked up a pair of wins on Saturday. The duo combined for a doubles victory at the second flight, and Chiricosta and Brozovich won in straight sets at singles flights number one and three, respectively.

"This was a very good road win," said BGSU head coach Penny Dean. "The match was a lot tighter than the 5-2 score might indicate.

"We got off to a slow start, but we picked up our play in singles. We got ahead in a few matches, only to see Duquesne come back at us, but we stemmed the tide."

In doubles play, the Chiricosta/Brozovich duo won decisively, downing Duquesne's team of Judy Li and Alexa Miller by a 6-2 final. But, the Dukes won at the other two flights by identical 6-4 scores to capture the initial point.

At the top flight, DU's Spencer Caravaggio and Sarah Shashura outlasted BGSU's team of senior Emily Reuland and sophomore Drew Fillis. And, in third-flight action, Falcon freshmen Harley Hutchison and Brittany Plaszewski fell to the Dukes' Chandler Consonary and Megan Wasson.

"Duquesne was after us from the get-go," said Dean. "They were very pumped up after winning the doubles point, but we did a great job of gaining the momentum in singles play. And, when they attempted to come back at us, we were able to keep them at bay."

The Falcons' five singles wins all came in straight sets, with Chiricosta and Plaszewski losing just four total games in their sweeps. Chiricosta topped Li by identical 6-2 scores at the top flight, while Plaszewski's win over Alrissa Tobe at the sixth flight also came by a 6-2, 6-2 result.

Plaszewski's win was the first dual-match singles victory of her young BGSU career. Fillis also picked up her first dual-match singles win as a Falcon on Saturday, sweeping Shashura at the fourth flight. After a 6-1 win in the opening set, Fillis closed out the win with a 7-5 victory in the second set.

"Congratulations to Drew and Brittany, as each of them picked up their first win in dual-match play today," said Dean. "Both of our freshmen in the lineup today, Brittany and Harley, did very well for us.

"And, Drew played a very good, focused match at the fourth flight to pick up the win. She stayed in the zone the entire match."

Hutchison swept Consonary in her opening set, then captured a second-set tiebreaker for the win at the fifth flight. Brozovich lost only six games in her third-flight win over Caravaggio, winning by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

DU's only win in singles play came at the second flight, where Miller won a lengthy tiebreaker by a 12-10 score over Reuland. That came after the pair had split a pair of 6-2 sets.

With a pair of wins on Saturday, Chiricosta continues to draw closer to the top of all three BGSU career wins lists. The senior now has 86 singles victories and 172 combined wins, and is second on both charts. She trails only her sister, Christine Chiricosta (2008-11), and Nikki needs just two singles and six overall wins to match Christine's records.

In doubles, Nikki Chiricosta now has 85 victories, and has moved past Jenny Cheung (1995-98) into sole possession of third place. She trails only Maddy Eccleston (97 doubles wins from 2010-13) and Christine Chiricosta (89 doubles wins) on that list.

The Falcons return to the road next Saturday (Feb. 8), heading to East Lansing, Mich., for a 10:00 a.m. dual vs. Michigan State University. The following day -- Sunday, Feb. 9 -- will see the Brown and Orange host UIC in a 9:30 a.m. start at the Perrysburg Tennis Center.
