ODOT at the ready for next storm

Posted: Updated:

As many of us rush to get the kids home after work, those who work for ODOT are heading into the storm.
With about 100 trucks patrolling our district, you'll see plenty of the neon green lights.

As snow readies its arrival for almost all of Ohio, temperatures drop.  But for ODOT, the bills from battling Mother Nature are only going up. Crews are beginning twelve hour shifts around the clock.  They're using extra, necessary labor hours and material to keep our roads passable.

"I think in this particular storm we're looking at a significant accumulation event.  Then if that doesn't happen, we're looking at blowing and drifting," Theresa Pollick said.  "The weather conditions that I think are the most adverse and what we don't want to see is ice."

Theresa Pollick and ODOT have plenty of tools at their disposal.  The saltwater brine works best above 20 degrees, but below that, workers need to use the pricier calcium chloride and beet heat.  ODOT has spent this winter experimenting with custom mixes.  The dry mix works best before or after a snow event but ODOT has a new wet mix that could go during the snow."

"Right now it has been very effective but one of the thing that we have to watch when we're doing that is the temperatures.  It's also something that we have to continually maintain throughout the snow storm, because of the fact that it could become icy in some areas.

So far this winter, District 2 has used about 57,000 tons of salt alone.  There's plenty of leftover salt still on area byways from last weekend's storm giving odot the rare opportunity to conserve product.  Still the bills are adding up.  At $6.5 million so far this winter for District 2 alone, that's $1.4 million ahead of the whole winter average.
