Free meals for plow drivers

Posted: Updated:

While the crews work outside to keep the roads safe and clear...there's a warm place inside Uncle Johns restaurant on Secor Road in West Toledo. They can stop and get a warm meal before they go back out.  And meals for plow drivers like Daniel VanFleet are free. Welcome news after a long morning. "Getting to the lots can be hard going around the cars that are stuck.", said VanFleet. Restaurant manager, Tara Lynch says, they will get up to 20 crews at a time during a storm like this. "We just want to say how much we appreciate them, they have to be out so I feel like we should be out saying thank you to them." And the doors are open around the clock, "they're usually pretty exhausted, said lynch, "usually some of them don't even know about it, so they'll just think we're picking up their tab!" The light in the storm for drivers like VanFleet, "During a level 3 our normal haunts are empty, there's nobody there, they get in trouble if they go to work." The owner of Uncle Johns Paul Bauman says, he's been doing this for over 30 years, and not once has anyone ever taken advantage. They've stopped...gotten a warm meal and got back out on the roads.
