Sheriff: 4 dead after fire at house in SW Michigan

Posted: Updated:

THREE OAKS, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say four people are dead following an early morning house fire in a small southwestern Michigan village.

Berrien County Sheriff L. Paul Bailey says the blaze in Three Oaks started about 5 a.m. Thursday.

The fire is being investigated by the village fire department and the state fire marshal's office.

The county's victim services unit and police chaplains are at the scene.

Bailey calls the fire and deaths a "tragedy" and that many people in the small community of about 1,800 people will "be grieving."

Three Oaks is just north of the state line with Indiana, about 20 miles northwest of South Bend, Ind., and 95 miles southwest of Grand Rapids.
