Toledo Hearing and Speech Center closing down

Posted: Updated:

A local non-profit that serves more than 700 children is about to close its doors for good.

Trustees of the Toledo Hearing and Speech Center have opted to dissolve the agency.

"It was a very heart wrenching decision," Executive Director, Pam Myers told 13abc.

35 employees and hundreds of adults and children will be affected by the closure, including David Harrington, 15, and his family.

David has autism.

"He was like a tasmanian devil," his mother Theresa Harrington said.  "I couldn't get him to write and he would throw everything."

That is, until they found the Toledo Hearing and Speech center.

Now, David is in school for the first time ever and doing very well.

"This place has been such a great gift and a blessing in our life," Harrington said.  "He had the most amazing therapist, one on one.  They worked with him about 2 hours a day for 7 years."

Myers says leaders did everything they could to spare the non-profit.  But funds are limited and expenses are rising.

"We were hit really hard in January with all this bad weather, not being able to have our therapist seeing clients," Myers said.

January's weather put the organization over the edge.

Over the years, Myers says there's been a loss of community funding, decreases in insurance reimbursements and the day to day expenses.

Now, the goal is to help make the transition as easy as possible for the staff and families.

"I want to say thank you to the community," Myers said.  "We've had a lot of people who've supported us in the past."

Friday marks the center's final day.
