Arizona dispatchers send “Happy Bucket” to Toledo fire dispatchers

Posted: Updated:

Toledo, OH - Toledo fire dispatchers received a surprise in the mail from dispatchers in Prescott, Arizona, where 19 firefighters died last summer in a wildfire.

This comes almost two weeks after two Toledo firefighters died while battling an apartment fire in North Toledo.

The heartwarming gift is called a "Happy Bucket." It's also known as the Traveling 9-1-1 Dispatch Box.

"It's full of trinkets and silly string and puzzles and candy and juice boxes just to brighten someone's day a little bit," says Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld of the Toledo Fire Department. "Those dispatchers gathered these things to bring a smile to the face of our dispatchers."

The Prescott dispatchers also sent a letter and pictures of all of their fallen heroes.  They said they were paying forward a comfort and kindness offered to them in their time of grief.  It's a gesture the Toledo dispatchers will continue.

"This box will stay here until the unfortunate time when there's another tragedy somewhere else in the United States and then we'll add to that box," says Lt. Hertzfeld.

Before the Happy Bucket was sent to Arizona, it was in Waco, Texas, where a group of firefighters died in a fertilizer plant explosion.

It was sent there in comfort and solidarity by dispatchers in Santa Cruz, California, where last year two police officers were killed.

Lt. Hertzfeld says he hopes the box stays here in Toledo for a long, long time.
