Senior center director takes action after racist remarks

Posted: Updated:

The executive director of the Zablocki Center takes action against a volunteer who made a racist comment toward a member.

The executive director says you wouldn't expect a hurtful statement like this one to be made in 2014. He says the volunteer admitted to making a mistake and he wrote an apology letter.

The executive director of the Zablocki Center says he won't tolerate anyone making insensitive remarks.

"We made it clear we don't tolerate that and that we were going to address it immediately," said the executive director of the ZaBlocki Center James Gramza.

They're words we can't use or show you, but the center's director says a volunteer made a racist statement toward another member.

The executive director took immediate action. He wrote an incident report, alerted the Zablocki Center's board president and held a meeting with the volunteer who made the racist comment.

"He along with myself agreed that he should write an apology which he did and I wrote an apology from the center. So we took it very seriously and I expressed that to her also several times."

The apology letter from the volunteer in part reads

"I realized how stupid and inappropriate those words are. A young lady was getting out of her car and heard those words.  I wish I could take those words back"

Mr. Gramza says he was disgusted by the hurtful statement made by the volunteer.

"It hurt me because our center is very diverse center and we provide a lot of services to this neighborhood . Thats what our center is about its about helping people and not hurting people"

The executive director has recommended the volunteer go to counseling to educate him on how racial slurs are hurtful.
