Mother speaks out after daughter’s killer takes plea deal

Posted: Updated:

He admits he's responsible for his wife's death, which the coroner ruled a homicide. Now, one local man is taking a plea deal for a lesser charge, and the victim's mother is speaking out.

Pictures of Beth Spaulding-Risenburg are posted online in the Facebook group "Justice for Beth." The group was created by Beth's mother, Maureen, who was convinced her daughter's death in 2012 was no accident.

Fremont police were also convinced. Last year, they arrested Beth's husband, Jason Risenburg, who was in North Carolina. Last month, he was set to go on trial for murder but accepted a plea deal for involuntary manslaughter, a charge with a maximum sentence of 11 years.

Maureen says she's still coming to terms with the bargain.

At 31 years of age, Beth was rushed to the hospital with an amount of pain medication in her system that proved lethal. Her death certificate now shows it was a homicide.

"I do hope that, if there's anybody out there who's in a relationship and they're questioning whether or not to trust their significant other, you should never have to question that," Maureen says. "If you are, get out before it's too late."

Risenburg is set for sentencing in Sandusky Municipal Court on February 24.

Friday would have been Beth's 33rd birthday.
