Whitmer remembers fallen firefighters

Posted: Updated:

In a field house, normally covered in maize and blue were fans dressed in red to honor a fallen graduate.

"Firefighting runs deep in this district," Superintendent of Washington Local Schools, Patrick Hickey said.

Toledo Firefighter Steve Machcinski was a 1989 graduate of Whitmer High School.  He and fellow Private Jamie Dickman sacrificed it all nearly two weeks ago.

"We want Mr. Machcinski's parents to know how much this community cares for them," Hickey said.  "They're really hurting and hopefully we can give them a little bit more peace."

Now, the 42-year-old forever has a place at WHS.  His name is proudly on display right along side the American flag.

"He will be remembered with honor for everything he stood for," Hickey told the crowd.

"Steve was very athletic here," acting Deputy Chief Rick Syroka told 13abc.  "He was a Whitmer grad and proud of it."

A handful of Toledo firefighters, some of them fellow Panthers, came to see the tribute.

A heartfelt gesture that's helping the department through it's hardest times.

"It's something that takes these types of moments where we can gather and celebrate Steve and Jamie's lives," Syroka said.  "It also helps the rest of our family try to heal."

The district also raised thousands of dollars for Dickman's family.

Sincere acts of kindness for two men who gave it all.
