The Bowling Green State University men's golf team will open up the 2014 spring slate by defending its Mid-American Match Play Championship hosted by Ball State University at the Lake Jovita South Course in Dade City, Fla. on Feb. 10-11.
The two-day event will be held at the par 72, 7,153 yards Lake Jovita South Course and will consist of 54 holes of match play competition. Teams are seeded 1 through 8 based upon the Golfstat rankings and then placed into a bracket. All teams are guaranteed three matches with losing teams from the first and second rounds continuing to compete in a consolation bracket. Each team match will consist of six individual matches.
The third annual MAC Match Play event hosts a tournament field of Eastern Michigan, Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Eastern Kentucky, Toledo, Xavier, Bowling Green and Ohio, which includes each of the last two tournament champions in Bowling Green in 2013 and Ball State in 2012.
Looking to defend their championship from last year, head coach Kevin Farrell's possible lineup includes two seniors, two juniors, a sophomore and two freshmen, as the Falcons drew 2012 Champion and 2013 Runner-Up Ball State in the first round.
Seniors Chris Melvin and Joshua Bialecki will look to lead the Falcons to its second consecutive MAC Match Play Championship. Melvin is coming off a strong fall season in which he posted a 72.60 stroke average over 15 rounds of play. The Massachusetts native recorded seven sub-par rounds, including a record low 18-hole round 68 twice during the fall season, and posted two top-10 finishes including a second-place finish at the John Piper Intercollegiate.
Bialecki played in three tournaments over the 2013 fall season, posting two top-30 finishes and a stroke average of 75.78 over nine rounds of play.
Juniors Joe Cooper and Ryan Triller both return to the MAC Match Play event where in last year's victory, Cooper went 1-1-1 overall and Triller went 2-0-1 over the three head-to-head bouts. This fall, Cooper turned in a stroke average of 75.67 over nine rounds of play, posting a low round 72 at both the Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate and the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational, while Triller carded two top-25 finishes, a low round 71, -1 under par, at the John Piper Intercollegiate and a stroke average of 74.67 over 15 rounds of play during the fall slate.
Underclassmen Holden Pahr, Jose Narro and Brett Rinker complete the list of Falcons that will tee-off to represent the Falcons. Pahr, who went 1-0-2 last year at the MAC Match Play event, played in two tournaments during the 2013 fall season, recording a low round 72 and a stroke average of 74.83 over six rounds of play.
Narro and Rinker, who are both competing in their first spring event of their young careers, are both coming off fall seasons in which the two competed in all five tournaments for the Falcons. Narro, who turned in a stroke average of 73.40 over the 15 rounds of play last fall, shot three sub-par rounds including a 68 at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational and a 69 at the John Piper Intercollegiate.
Like Narro, Rinker also registered three sub-par rounds in his first fall season at BGSU, posting a Falcon low round of 67 at the Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate and a 68 at the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational. Rinker led the Falcons over the fall season with a team-best 72.73 stroke average and had three top-15 finishes overall.
The first round of play will start on Monday, Feb. 10 at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start and will be immediately followed by the second round of play later on in the day.
The third and final round will tee-off at with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
