Falcons fall for first time, 5-2 at Michigan State

Posted: Updated:

The Bowling Green State University tennis team won the doubles point, but host Michigan State University rallied back to capture five singles matches en route to a 5-2 win over the Falcons Saturday (Feb. 8). The non-conference dual match was held at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 5-1 on the year, while the Falcons lose for the first time, falling to 2-1 in dual-match play.

Sophomore Katie Brozovich picked up a pair of wins on Saturday. Brozovich teamed with senior Nikki Chiricosta for a win at the second doubles flight, and she was BG's lone winner in singles, downing the Spartans' Emily Meyers at the third flight.

At the third doubles flight, the Falcons' freshman duo of Hannah Drayton and Harley Hutchison posted a victory, downing MSU's Athena Trouillot and Anna Zelechonok by a 6-3 final.

Chiricosta and Brozovich stopped the Spartans' Meyers and Julianne Gruber by a 6-4 final, and BGSU's top-flighted doubles duo, senior Emily Reuland and sophomore Drew Fillis, very nearly made it a complete sweep in doubles, falling in a tiebreaker to Marina Bohrer and Erin Faulkner.

In singles, however, the Spartans rallied with four straight-sets wins, and the teams split the two matches to require a tiebreaker. MSU's Catherine Parenteau downed Reuland in a narrow 10-7 'breaker at the second flight, while Brozovich won a 10-5 decision in her tiebreaker vs. Meyers at flight number three.

With her doubles win on Saturday, Chiricosta crept ever closer to the school career record for combined victories. She now has 173 combined career wins, just five shy of her sister's total. Christine Chiricosta (2008-11) currently holds the mark with 178 wins as a Falcon.

Brozovich now has a career record of 63-30, including a 37-19 singles record and a 26-11 doubles mark as a Falcon. Brozovich now has a singles mark of 23-2 in dual-match play in her BG career, including a 3-0 singles ledger in duals this year to date.

BGSU will be back in action on Sunday morning (Feb. 9), hosting UIC at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The match is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m.
