In a game that saw 13 ties and 14 lead changes, it was Marygrove that came out on top Saturday afternoon, defeating Lourdes 78-70 at the Northwest Activities Center in Detroit, Mich.
Zach Steinmetz (Toledo, Ohio/Saint John's H.S.) tallied a double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, while Eric Worthey (Cleveland, Ohio/Cuyahoga Valley Christian H.S.) added 20 points, making 7-of-11 shots from the floor for the Gray Wolves.
Lourdes shot 46.8% from the floor, but committed 21 turnovers on the afternoon, 13 via Mustang steals.
The Gray Wolves took their largest lead of the game with 7:07 to play in the first half, 29-21, before Marygrove answered with eight straight points to tie the game. The two schools went into the locker room tied at 35.
Neither team led by more than four over the first eight minutes of the second half before the Mustangs pushed the lead to five, 56-51, at the 11:15 mark following a 6-0 run. Lourdes cut the deficit down to one several times down the stretch, but was never able to take the lead again. Two free throws by Worthey tied the contest at 67 with 1:51 to play, but the Mustangs scored the next five points to take the lead for good, and made six free throws in the final 30 seconds of the contest to secure the win.
DeVonte Pryor led five Marygrove (3-23, 2-16 WHAC) players in double figures, scoring 18 points off of the bench. Darryll Dixon added 17 points in the win while JuJuan Armstrong tallied 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Lourdes (14-12, 9-9) will look to snap its two-game losing skid on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Northwestern Ohio at Tam-o-Shanter. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
